Visit the Kailua Beach Park. Take a ¼ mile swim out to Flat Island. Or go for a long walk along the 5 miles of white sandy beach or just loll on the sand and watch the world go by. It’s also a great spot to watch the kayaks, wind surfers and kite surfers. Nearby Kalapawai Market (the green country store) and across the street at the Kailua Beach center you can find food and other items for the beach.
Go surfing at Kalama Beach Park. This is a great place for beginners to learn to boogie board, bodysurf or ride a surfboard. This is an excellent place for younger children to learn, as it is relatively shallow with a sandy bottom and the gentle waves offer a 30-yard ride. Board rentals are available at several locations in Kailua.
Paddle a Kayak and paddle out to Flat Island or to the Mokulua Islands (also known as the Mokes). Twogood’s, 262-5656 (at the Daiei shopping area - on Hahani St.) and the Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, 262-2555 (at the Beach Center across from the Kalapawai Market on Ku’ukama St) both rent kayaks by the ½ day or full day. The “Mokes” are about 1 mile off of Lanikai beach and Flat Island is only ¼ mile off of Kailua Beach Park.
Learn to Windsurf. There are several rental companies right at the north end of Kailua Beach Park behind the Kalapawai Market, where you can get lessons. The trade winds usually blow onto the beach, which makes a great place to learn or watch the experts.
Try Kite Surfing - The latest craze at the beach. Lessons are available from Robbie Naish’s surf shop in Kailua or Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, (262-2555, 130 Kailua Rd).
Visit Lanikai Beach. The sunrises are spectacular and it is a quiet beach to lounge in the sun. Lanikai Beach has consistently been one of the top 5 beaches in the world. Its clean golden sandy beach, crystal clear azure blue waters and lack of waves make it an excellent choice to bring the tiny tots for their first salt water experience. Note: Lanikai is a residential neighborhood, and the beach is not a public park. It does not have amenities, restrooms or lifeguards. There are 6 public right-of-way accesses to the beach.
Have a picnic at the Kailua Beach Park. The Park has picnic bench sites located throughout the area, some with views overlooking the ocean. You can either pack your lunch or order, “to go” at several of the great restaurants or from the markets in the area.
Go Snorkeling along the Kailua or Lanikai beaches. You can rent snorkeling equipment form Aaron’s Dive shop, Oahu Dive Center (both on Hahani St.) or Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks at the Kailua Beach Center on Ku’ukama St. across from the beach park. There is some good beginner snorkeling right off the beach opposite Moku Manu Street in Lanikai. Most days you often catch a glimpse of green sea turtles swimming in the area.
Go Scuba Diving. Dive trips can be arranged with Oahu Dive Center (263-7333) or Aaron’s Dive Shop (261-1211). Both provide great adventures and offer certification training through their PADI School. A current diving certificate is required for most dives.
Go for an Acrobatic Airplane ride. Call Clint Churchill, of Acroflight (647-3208) who offers rides in his acrobatic plane. He can often be seen doing stunts over the Bay.
Go Bike Riding. Bikes can be rented from The Bike Shop (270 Kuulei Road, 261-1553) and Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks (130 Kailua Road, 262-2555) located in town. The dike along the Kawai Nui Marsh is a great hike at the beginning of town off the Pali Highway. The 9 mile Manawili trail that takes off from the hairpin turn on the Pali Highway is another. Breath-taking views can be seen from the top of the ridge over Lanikai or the top of Mount Olomana for the adventurers. There is an Oahu hiking guidebook in each of the units at the B&B.
